Digital Communication

Table of Contents

Communication is the continuous process of giving and taking information between messenger and receiver. As you can share your idea come with others and get a better concluding idea. There are many ways to communicate: directly talking with others using language, body language, etc. The hardest way to communicate is by using body language because it might confuse the receiver. It is very hard to communicate with others because by using body language, it is hard to share complex information. Body language can cover only simple things. Also, there are risks for body language, such as the receiver might not get what messenger tried to say. If you communicate directly by actually talking face to face, you can get trustful information but the opportunity is kind of limited because to talk face to face, the receiver and messenger have to stay in the same place. Additionally, the receiver and messenger have to use the same language to communicate successfully. The most popular way to communicate is by using Internet. There are many positive and negative effects of using Internet as a tool of communication. For example, if you use Internet, you can communicate with anyone as long as they are on-line; it does not matter if they are far away. On the other hand, as you use internet, there are many risks such as cyber bully. Also, you can share your idea and make a better concluding idea but you might say something that might hurt others feeling. Because you are not looking each other if you use internet, you can communicate easier than before; however, your comment might hurt others feeling and make them frustrated. In addition, it is very easy to communicate with others by using internet. You can get enormous amount of information in very little. However, if you over use them, it is very harmful for your body and you may lose your time a lot. Because Internet is connected to the world, you can make many friends in the whole world but this also can be dangerous because you might communicate with people who you don’t want to be friend. You can socialize with anyone anytime by using social networking websites, such as Face book. However, this might be a serious risk because by using those kinds of websites, any strangers can get your information. Also, Internet contains much false information because anyone can put their thoughts. The following are the two ethical issues about communication: Is it OK to give false information to others and not be responsible about your information? Is it right to bother others by writing negative comments, or being a cyber bully to others?
- Is it OK to give false information to others and not be responsible about your information?
It is totally unethical thing to give false information to others and not be responsible about your information because for you, it might be easier to answer but for the receiver, he or she might get in trouble by the information that he or she got.

- Is it right to bother others by writing negative comments, or being a cyber bully to others?
This statement is also totally unethical thing to do. If you are a cyber bully or write a negative comments, for you, it is very fun and entertaing but for the person who receive the negative comment or who have been cyber bullied, it is going to be really upset.

Students should make sure that their assigned age group is represented in all of the

5 topics listed below.

1. Overview/Description of the various aspects of the topic.

Digital Communication is communication using electronics. Examples of this are emailing, texting using cell phones, wiki, blogging, instant messaging, video conferencing, social network/facebook, virtual worlds.

Elementary Aged Students

Elementary Aged Students use different types of Digital Communication then older people do. Examples of what types of Digital Communications elementary aged students use are: Webkins, Build a Bear,Woogi World, Club Penguin, Cartoon Network,Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, and YouTube. How are parents able to watch there elementary aged students work with digital communication? They could go with their child to school and see what they are doing in their class.Elementary Aged children may face vision problems caused by the usages of the computer. Some problems caused by this: blurred vision, headaches, red, itchy or watery eyes, squinting, rubbing the eyes, excessive blinking, covering or closing one eye. Parents may want to have their children's eyes checked. These are just some problems caused by the computer usage to elementary aged students. Kids are also spending a fair bit of time on the internet and can be lacking in sports, like not getting out side and playing any sports.

Middle/ High School Aged Students

Middle/ High School students communicate with some greatly advanced technology. These include text messaging on cell phones, myspace, facebook, youtube, and emailing.

Growing up into a world full of electronics, having them everywhere. Teenagers have grown and addapted to well. People are relying on the new and advanced technology to communicate with their friends. It is rapidly expanding. The kids are using computers to talk to each othere as well as mobile phones, texting people and calling, On the internet they are using Myspace and Facebook as well as MSN. Other people talk through YouTube.

Cell Phones
The cell phone is most likely the coolest, most wanted thing around today. Almost everybody has one and if they don’t they want one. Kids get cell phones when they are younger than the second grade. They can call and also text people. Many kids can’t live without texting for even a day. This makes cell phones so wanted. Parents also want kids to have cell phones because they make them feel safe. If a child is lost or in trouble, the child could call someone or dial 911 for help. A cell phone is also good when you go to an amusement park or theme park. The child could keep up with their parents or friends and see what they are doing and where they are located. Cell phones are a good thing for teenagers.

Adults

There are many different types of digital communication that adults use...Emails/Instant Messaging, Blogs, Cell phones-texting (mobile phones). Another way to communicate is though analog communication. Analog communication is communicating, but not using digital techniques here are a few examples: personal visits, letters, telephone calls, fax, telegrams, paging, broadcasting. Some adults, may, perfer this type of communication to communication over technology due to 'lack of knowledge' about technology...As they haven't grown up with it, like we have and it is constantly expanding. It is hard for some to keep up.

wiki_project.jpg

Digital communication is the electronic exchange of information, via e-mail, cell phones, video conferencing, instant messaging, text messaging, blogs, and wikis. The 21st century offers us a variety of new technology allowing us to stay in constant communication.

Cell phones- In today’s time and age almost everyone has a cell phone. Some children even get them before they are in 2nd grade. The positive of this is that it makes most parents feel more secure know that if something bad happened their child could call 911. The ability to “text message” on a phone has virtually made verbal communication a thing of the past with the younger cell phone users, some parent’s don’t like their children’s constant texting because it distracts them from doing things that they need to do everyday like chores and homework. Some phones have become so advanced that they can even access the internet. Most adults use cell phones for everyday communication.

Blogs- A blog is a website that allows people to add videos or graphics. The website is maintained by individuals. Businesses use blogs to display marketing information. Teacher are also starting to use blogs for there classes. They can post homework assignments and projects on the blogs.

Video Conferencing- Some uses: Telemedicine, Telecommunication, Education, Surveillance, and Security. Most adults are likely to use this kind of digital communication more frequently that kids. Business meetings can be made easier due to this technology. It also helps people in remote locations communicate with others.

2. Background of the topic including specific real examples.

Elementary Aged Students

I think that YouTube is a bad example for little kids. When ever they get on they see videos that they do not need to be seeing. YouTube is not able to block bad videos for example there are some TVs where you can block the channels that you do not want your children watching.
I think that another example would be club penguin because it involves little kids interacting bye making friends and there could really be old creepy people on there pretending to be younger so they can take advantage of them and that is feral !!.and ur child could be in danger

Middle/ High School Aged Students

A bad example for teenagers is IM speak. If they use this, people from other countries won't understand them. If they use capitol letters all the time, people from other countries will think they're screaming. IM speak is things like omg, idk, and lol.

YouTube is great to watch but at the same time very dangerouse for the silly users. Many people end up watching the wrong and stupid things that some others users have added to the site. Teenagers know about this site via friends and other realitives. As there are many different topics to look at some quite sick. Teenagers have also been uploading fights of other students in there school of their friends. Most of the fights involve little kids and rapests. Some of those teenagers are brutily bashed and filmed. Most of them because of entertainment for the bully. I Dought that the bully would like to be the one getting bash and humiliated.

Adults

Years ago, people communicated using telephones, faxes, letters and speaking face-to-face, analogue communication. As the modern world developed, peoples needs expanded and communication ‘evolved.’ Today communication is much broader, and we use things like mobile phones, e-mails, video conferencing, blogs and virtual worlds.
As this became more common, people didn’t bother to write ‘proper’ words anymore, they wrote abbreviated words, known as Instant Messaging speak.

3. Social / ethical aspects of the topic including how real people and communities have been positively or negatively affected and legal consequences

Elementary Aged Students

There are kids that are affected by digital communication every day. There as been a lot of bad things happening to kids your age and kids younger then you. I feel sorry for the for the kids that had to go through all of that.

One of the coolest and most common pieces of technology around is the cell phone. Almost everybody has one, and in some cases little kids get them before they even reach 2nd grade. You can talk communicate verbally and text message each other. On some phones you can even get on the internet. But almost every elementary aged kid doesn’t have a phone that has internet access so that isn’t something that a parent would need to worry about. Most people these days are getting phones just for texting but that is not always the case for young children. Parents usually get them one for emergencies and because it makes them feel safe. Just in case something happens to their child they know he or she can call 911. One common addiction for teenagers is texting. Luckily parents don’t have to worry about that as much for elementary kids as they do teenagers. Because not all little kids have phones at that age and out of the few that have them not all know how to use them.

Young children are influenced many websites such as Webkins, Woogi World, Club Penguin, Cartoon Network, and Youtube. On websites like Webkins, Club Penguin, or Woogi World kids can communicate with others. One problem could be that they are allowed to communicate with others. What they might not know is that it could be an internet stalker. They might not even know that they are communicating with them.

Middle/ High School Aged Students

The community has been negatively and positively affected by digital communications. It's been negatively affected because teenagers have begun texting more than talking to their friends. This can be quite addicting to some people. It's also been positively affected because if someone's in trouble, they can text or call someone for help. One of the worst examples of digital communications is cyberbullying. This is when kids are made fun of over the internet. Do you remember this kid? He had been making a private video and it got out. he had to change his name and move schools. This is cruel and humiliating and it needs to stop. No one should be affected this way.Digital Communication provides users instant access to other on an unprecedebted level. Many perfer using e-mail over a phone call because e-mail provides a record of the message. But there are consequences to this built-in record-keeping feature. Users forget that even though they may delete a message it is usually stored on a server or is baked up for future review. This means users need to think about what thet say when using e-mail. Likewise, e-mail technologies can be used inappropriately.
Email
There is many was to communicate with others. One of the ways teenagers communicate is emailing. Email allows people to receive mail and letters over the internet. Everyone can now just mail stuff without the post office. Sending stuff through the post office is now known as “snail mail.” You can just click a button and it is there. People also get things that they think is “cool” or “cute” and they forward it to all their friends. This creates a huge chain message. This may be fun but it raises issues. The owners of personal computers or P.C.’s get spam through these messages. Spam is one way that viruses can get passed to different computers.

Adults

Many adults have been saved by the use of digital communication. One for example would be Shannon Haight; she was abducted by a stranger & called her boyfriend on her cell phone. Her cellphone saved her and I'm sure many others.

One negative social aspect about adults and digital communication is that many adults find new technology difficult to learn about and use. This means that adults are at risk of being out-of-contact with the world around them.
There may also be barriers between younger people and adults, as Instant Messaging speak, is commonly used online with younger people, and not necessarily with adults…Adults won’t be able to understand everything being said by younger people, as most adults don’t ‘keep-up’ with technology.

4. Possible solutions to the problems that have emerged.

Elementary Aged Students

My solution for this problem is to take the digital communication processing away from all elementary aged students and dont let them play with it until they are old enough. It will keep your children safe. If I was in this situation i would block it from my children and not let them play those virtual world, digital communication games.

Middle/ High School Aged Students

Some solutions to these problems lay with the kids themselves. They need to stop staying on the computer so much and do other things. They should also keep things private when they make videos, unlike the Star Wars Kid. Kids should also not say mean things about people online. They think it's private, but it's not.

Text Messaging
Text messaging has become an addiction to almost every teenager. Cell phones are mainly good, but they can also be bad. They can be good because they can help you communicate with your friends and families without calling them and having to talk out loud. They are bad because you can get very bad and nasty things on your phone through text messages.

Adults

There are a few solutions to solving emerged problems, the first one being, stop using sites, such as My Space, Face Book etc. and start communicating by analog communication, if that’s what you prefer.
Another solution is to create a site for adults to use only. This may create a little less confusion and make it easier for adults to communicate over the web.
Another solution is---Adults, keep up with technology, or don’t use it. Use whatever sort of communication you want to, weather it’s writing a letter to someone or e-mailing them.

5. Guideline(s) or rule(s) by age group

A. I think that elementary aged students should not be able to use digital communication because, they are not old enough to use it yet. I think that they need to be more muter before they get to use it.

B. Middle / High School Aged Students

As people communicate over the internet or the moblie they should always remember that people can interpitate the words however they please. Sometimes even sayning LOL cant work. As teenagers start to talk more they interpritate more. But What you cant say to the face you shouldnt say it at all. If you cant say somthing nice don't say anyth ing at all.

Digital citizenship

(Investigate, design, plan, create and evaluation)
.

Digital citizenship can be described as knowing how to behave appropriately and responsibly with regard to technology use. Nine elements have been identified that together make up digital citizenship. These are: **Digital Etiquette** , digital communication, **Digital Law** , **Digital Rights and Responsibilities**, **Digital Health and Wellness** and **Digital Security**, Digital access, digital commerce and digital literacy. My group and I chose the digital communication for this project, because we consider that communication is one of the easiest elements to understand and find information about it. It’s important for us because many people wouldn't be able to converse easily, especially globally. For example, the majority of people living in Qatar are not nationals. If we don’t have digital tools (mobiles, telephones, laptops…) to use we couldn’t be able to communicate together. But, when we use these types of tools we could be able to communicate easily with our friends and family and our relatives.

Definition and background material:

Digital communication is the electronic exchange of information, via e-mail, cell phones, video conferencing, instant messaging, text messaging, bogs, and wikis. The 21st century offers us a variety of new technology allowing us to stay in constant communication. (e.g., e-mail, cellular phones, instant messaging). The increasing digital communication options have changed everything because people are able to keep in constant communication with anyone else. Now everyone is afforded the opportunity to access information anywhere and anytime.
Regrettably, a lot of administrators, teachers, and students have not been qualified how to make suitable decisions when faced so many different digital communication options.

Research & Background Material:
A simple way to understand What digital communication is: digital communication includes anything involving e-mail, cellular phones, instant messaging, and more! Here are some listed resources, and a basic definition of what can be found on these pages, showing examples of these types of digital communication.

Here is some good and helpful website about digital communications:

http://cable.tmcnet.com/topics/cable/articles/42463-nexhorizons-deploy-blankom-digital-cable-television-solution-chula.htm

in this article they are using one of the digital communications which is digital cable television. They are using the advantages of digital communication. This article is great because it tells us how digital communication has been used through the world. In this article the digital cable television is one of the solution that has been selected b y Nexhorizon communications.

this article applies more to people my age (teenagers). It describes the use of cell phones between teenagers, and how it affects their social standing. It shows us that when a group of teenagers get together, they are more likely to be talking on their cell phones then with each other

This article is based about digital communication as a whole; particularly the internet. It discusses the importance of internet in modern day communication, as well what is appropriate on the internet and what should be censored.

My group and I are planning to present our topic to grade 4E class in the primary, so that they could benefit from our topic:

·
They need to be acquainted with how to approach digital communication, how to use it correctly, and how to have fun with it (so that it is not as confusing in the future!)

·
They can be introduced to some pieces of technology that can be shared with others, which will assist them inside and outside school.

At last my group and I we know what to do exactly in this project and we are working together so that we could use our time wisely. We planned our work and we understood our topic from our investigation and, I am contributing to my wiki and ning all the time, because our teacher told us that we must contribute to them as we are working. Now we have to plan our design cycle and discuss what we are going to present to the class. When we work together, use our time wisely, and listen to the teacher instructions we could all know what to do. This project is fun!!!!!!

We are going to attempt to address our new problem statement by explaining the things we are going to do in our movie. We will make a movie and create a brochure for the students. We gathered a lot of information from our investigation, so we know all the information we need. We just need to plan our work. I have to learn some skills such as the imovie because when we finish from shooting our movie we must edit it, so I must learn how to work on it. I will learn it by practicing on it. (Know how to put music, edit writing and stuff like that ….) We know that our solution for this problem statement will work because we will not only present our video, instead we will make some brochures for the students so that they could understand our topic more. (We will ask some questions for them and we will discuss it with them) and by this way our solution will work easily and the primary students will understand our topic easily without any difficulties.

Story board: (this will show how our final lesson will look like)

Topic: communication

Amna: will take some shots of pictures (pictures that relate with some different types of communication)
examples: telephones, mobile, laptops and many more stuff

Layan: will be participating in the video ( I will be holding the types of communication)

Our video will be about 2- 3 minutes (we will not speak thorough the video, because our aim is to show the audience the types of communication that the adults and high school students use). We will add some information, pictures about the types of communication and music, so that it will be more fascinating and attractive to the primary students .

Screen shot of our plan to the video we will present:

'Should Have' characteristics for your solution.
Video: Make it, edit it, improve it and practice it.
We made the video / we must edit it more( improve it )
Make brochure: chose the information that I want to include, put some pictures.
We must use simple and easy language, so that they could understand our topic.
Do not put too many information in it, make it simple and easy for the primary students.
The plan, create and the reflection/Evaluation are in the second part because the attachment is too big .
Plan:
This is a timeline:
What we have to do :

We must plan our video: what information to put inside, pictures and music.
Date (How many lessons?)

We need two lessons to shoot our video. When we shoot the video it takes a lot of time and effort to do that, so we need two lessons.

What are the information: definition of digital communication, describe and explain it. Examples of digital communication (pictures : cell phones, laptops…) and how to communicate with others and where and when

We need one lesson for this, because we only have to write our information. It doesn’t need a lot of time to do that

We must edit our movie (by adding more information, pictures and music). We must create a brochure for the students. We must use easy and simple language for the student. In the brochure we will add some pictures and information. I will try to keep it easy for them so that they could understand the topic. I will add some colors and pictures, so they could enjoy while reading.

We need two or three lesson to do that, because two days for editing. Editing needs a lot of time and one lesson for making the brochure.

Practice our presentation in class, so that we are ready to present the next day. Maybe after presenting our video to the class, we will show them some information on utube. This information really connects with out topic. ( Digital communication)

We need one lesson to practice .It is easy to do it. We just go over our work. We check our work again.

Present to the 4E class (Primary student): give out the brochures, show them our video, discuss it with them and ask questions for them. At last they must have understood our topic.

We need one lesson to do that. At last we did our job and write an evaluation about this project.

Our video that we made during the IT lesson:
we did two things: we created a video about our topic and we made a brochure, so that the students could understand our video.

To play this movie you must press Ctrl and press on the picture itself (then u press yes and it will play.
If it didn’t work go to my blogger website and u could watch it : http://umglasses.blogspot.com/

After we finished from our video we made a brochure, so that the 4E class could understand the topic more. I used simple language and I made some colorful decorations for them, so that they could enjoy it. I took some screen shots of my brochure.

Reflection/Evaluation :

My partner and I finished everything. We completed our presentation to the grade 4E class and they liked our topic a lot and they enjoyed the brochure that we made. I really liked my topic a lot. It is easy and simple to understand. At first I didn’t know exactly what digital communication is, but after this project I have a lot of information about it. I could talk a lot about it, without even referring to my information. I investigated a lot about, and this investigation gave a lot of information. three sources of information that turned up very important in my research are :
http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2003/05/58861////**
http://cable.tmcnet.com/topics/cable/articles/42463-nexhorizons-deploy-blankom-digital-cable-television-solution-chula.htm
These are the three most important sources of information. Two of them are articles and one of them explains our topic. They are important because they tell us about digital communication and how it is helpful and useful for people. (People use it for education, entertaining and many more stuff…….). My group was very accommodating through this project. We were all cooperative and supportive. We all contributed our work in the wiki and in the ning, So that we could share our information together. We send much information to each other and we talk about our topic. We helped each other and gave advices what to do. WE were all together. Each one of us gave information and we discussed it through the ning. There were some weakness in our group at first, nobody was contributing in the wiki, but when I told them that we must all discuss the topic they all started contributing. We all talked together and we distinguished ourselves in this process. It was really fun and enjoyable because you talk to people online ( u describe yourself for them , u add them as a friend and u talk to them ) and you discuss the topic with them . It is interesting to know people through the ning. Diigo bookmarks were helpful for me through this project, because I used them while I was investigation my topic. I put the links over there and that was a quick way to put and save my links, so it was helpful.
The Digiteen Action project was very interesting and appealing. We did two different things. We created a movie and we made a brochure for the primary students. Our movie took most of our time; we had to film many things Such as: cell phones, laptops, face book, msn and things that are related to the communication. After shooting it we edit our movie. Editing was kind of hard for me, because I didn’t know how to work on the Imac movie. It was difficult for me at the beginning. This was definitely one of my weaknesses. However, I was usually quite confident with meeting the deadlines and stuck to my plan as often as I could.
If I was to do this over again, I would definitely plan my work out better. I would make a strict schedule and stick to it, therefore using my time much more wisely. Hopefully this way I would ensure to get my work done on time and keep up with everything at once. Other then that, I was very pleased with the final outcome of our presentation, and felt that I had done a lot of work towards it. Then we created our own brochure. It was very nice from the outside. I used many decorations and colorful pictures. I tried to keep it easy and simple for the 4E class. Our target audience for this project was the 4E class we chose them because they need to be acquainted with how to approach digital communication, how to use it correctly, and how to have fun with it (so that it is not as confusing in the future!) . Also because they can be introduced to some pieces of technology that can be shared with others, which will assist them inside and outside school.

Our team was effective in the action project because we accomplished what we intended to do. We made the movie, the brochure, we practiced it when we finished and we presented our work for the 4E class, and the 4E class enjoyed our topic a lot and they started discussing it with us and this was our target and we did it. We could improve it by making a PowerPoint for the students, so that they could understand more about the topic or maybe we had to increase our movie and add more information. We could improve it also by making the information much easier for the primary students because when they were watching our movie, they didn’t understand some of the words. Creating a movie about the topic we did is something that other schools should consider in their digital citizenship program, because when you make a movie about the topic this shows that you understood the topic and you could explain it to others. Creating a video is a good thing and most of my class made a movie about their topic.
Digital citizenship is something that should be discussed with children in the school because it will help in their lives. They must understand and know the nine different elements, because they must know how to behave appropriately and responsibly with regard to technology use. The Nine elements have been identified that together to make up digital citizenship. I think that the teenagers should learn about this because they are the ones who are using the technology the most and especially the internet. They must know how to behave and respond with regard to technology. I think that Digital communication and **Digital Health and Wellness** are the most important topics because the teenagers must now how to communicate together ( for ex: they must put appropriate pictures and information , not bad things ) and they must know how to use it or they will harm themselves ( for ex: do not sit too close in front of the computer and stuff like that ). In this project I learnt a lot of things. I learnt a lot from the ning. I have lots of friends from this topic. This project allows you to communicate with different people (people U don’t know) , and this is something very important , because you have to shares ideas , draw conclusions and work together as a group and because of this I liked the project a lot . I learnt how to use the Imovie and how to edit it. I believe that I worked really hard on the project from the very beginning. I believe that I met the deadlines whenever we were given them, and was usually on task in the classroom. I also worked hard at home to insure that everything was perfect, and the wikispace really helped me create an easy connection between my school work, as well as what I did at home. I worked very hard throughout the entire project, and it was all worth it in the end. It was a valuable project and I would certainly recommend using it with future classes because I relished it so much.
