1. Overview/Description of the various aspects of the topic.

Elementary Aged Students

Elementary aged students are using Digital Literacy everyday.Children are learning more about computers as they get older. Children are tempted to copy and paste information that they found on the internet into Microsoft Word. This is called plagiarism. You are not allowed to go to a website and get information and paste it into Microsoft Word and say that you wrote it. Children do this thinking that their teacher will think that they wrote it.

Digital Literacy is being able to know how to use and create information using computers.

Digital literacy is when people learn how to use the computer effectively, and not just for games, not saying that computers should just be for work, but you do know how to use the computer to do work, not just for games.
Digital literacy can also be for other things like mobile phones, and how to be safe on them.

Middle/High School Aged Students
Middle/ High School Aged Students need digital literacy now more than ever.As we continue to mature the technology in our world is increasing. Teachers are beginning to use overhead projectors, clickers, and television more. Because of this we are relying on computers more now than we were previously.Technology is advancing and it is getting harder to keep up with, but schools are teaching us more about it and using it more and more.
Digital Literacy is used all of the time with teens and is increasing rapidly. When you use your new phone to text to your friend, or use MSN to talk to your old friends half way across the world you are using Digital Literacy.

In present day usage of the internet, there are more than 750 million messages sent through the buddy list. In the buddy list there is 40 million users of instant messaging and the AOL’s buddy list. In the AOL messaging system there are 150,000 people registered and using it. That is almost the whole population of FT Lauderdale, Florida. Although AOL alone has sent 250 million more messages a day than the 500 million letters sent through mail. The internet has had a big impact on reaching people, the radio its self took 38 years to reach 50 million users. It took 13 years for the TV to reach people, and 5 years for the internet. Some cool facts about the internet are 56% of teens prefer the internet more than a telephone. For communication, 91% of teens use the internet to contact people. Things like MSN, AOL, and chatrooms, 83% of teens use them. As you can tell that the internet has had a huge impact on today’s present teens.

Digital literacy is the ability to use and understand technology. Digital Literacy is used so regularly by adults. While students have grown up using digital literacy, adults have to learn it now. Being able to use Digital Literacy is now a necessity in their lives. In order to keep their jobs, they have to keep up with the always changing technology. Students have grown up using digital literacy, but adults are having to learn it now.

2. Background of the topic including specific real examples.

Digital literacy is something that we use daily to accomplish numerous tasks. Many teachers use this in classrooms daily. Now, all of us are learning to use digital literacy and are becoming very dependent on this. Digital literacy will affect if we get jobs and much more as time progresses.

Elementary Aged Students

Teachers are teaching children about computers and other technology that they will need to know in the future. Teachers are teaching elementary aged students by using smartboards, overhead projectors and computers to help them teach kids about digital literacy while using digital literacy.

Middle/ High School Aged Students

Some teachers are trying to use digital literacy in there classrooms daily to try to help students become involved. Our teachers use overhead projectors, smartboards, and televisions. Many of us use computers in our classes. If we do not learn how to use computers we could soon be separated by the digital divide. The digital divide could end up leaving some of us jobless. We need to be able to use all of the technology we have access to so we can succeed.
In a article called "Digitally addicted kids threaten to return to civilization to the dark ages" a girl named Megan Meier committed suicide due to Cyber bullying. A kid named Josh Evans did this, who later turned out to be Megan's ex boyfriends mom Lori Drew.

There are so many examples of digital literacy. We use them in everyday life. We use computers all the time, don’t we? I know if you work in an office then you do. Also, Teens are in love with text messages, although text messaging can be very harmful. While texting you could be bullying someone. Like I said before about computers, not only do business people use them, but parents and teens, and maybe some younger children. Teens get in chat rooms all the time. Some probably don’t even know what they are getting into. In chat rooms people can be pushed to do something or even be bullied. Chat rooms and the use of text messaging can be harmful.

Tasks are being accomplished with the use of technology more than ever. People are regularly having to upgrade there technology skills to keep their jobs. Relying too much on technology is a problem because it isn't always reliable. Power cut outs, bad reception and viruses have the ability to stop us from using certain technological devices. Teachers are using Power Points to show information to students in new ways. Teachers are also using smartboards, and students can respond by using clickers.

3. Social / ethical aspects of the topic including how real people and communities have been positively or negatively affected and legal consequences

Elementary Aged Students

Elementary students use digital literacy in good ways and bad ways. The bad ways they use it is plagiarism. They would rather someone else do the typing and work for them. Children may cheat by texting during a test and asking for the answers. If they are taking a test on the internet they could also instant message each other during the test. Children that are good with computers help teachers trust them more when taking tests on the internet.

Middle/ High School Aged Students

Digital literacy is very helpful, but now we are finding ways where it is not so helpful. In today’s world digital literacy has had a huge impact on present day teens.People that know how to use computers are using them to cheat and plagiarize. This makes teachers unable to trust us on the internet.
People plagiarize because it is easier to pay someone to do the work for them than having to sit there and write out the paper themselves. If you get caught plagiarizing you could get into serious trouble.
The other problem we have is cheating. People are able to cheat online by getting on the internet. Cheating on the internet is something that is becoming more common.
Digital literacy can be very helpful, but if we abuse it to our advantages it can come back and hurt us. People are going to get where they will not trust us and we will not be able to use the technology we have in our world.

You use it not only for information, but also for communication, such as e-mail, aim, and chat rooms. Digital literacy is trying to teach basic computer concepts and skills. Literacy isn’t being able to read and write, like used to be. It deals with being able to tell the difference between a real and fake website.

The internet is a powerful source. It evolves the teaching and learning sources for today’s world. It offers a great opportunity for a teen’s resource. The internet is a use of a huge environment. Teen’s can improve there literacy skills and problem solving skills by the use of the internet. Not only teens but adults and elementary age students. The internet may and can teach students to work together and solve problems while in a group.

Although the internet is a great source, students of all ages are becoming more dependent to the internet. They copyright. People copy peoples work all the time. Copy and pasting is such an easy thing to. People all around the world do it on a day to day basis. Copy righting is an illegal thing to do, when you do so it is known as the Copyright and Fair use Law. You could go to jail, and depending on how made it was you could go to prison for a very long time.

Also, you should not put any private information about yourself on the internet. Although you can delete it, it still can be restored. Or maybe even spread across the whole cyber space world. Computers may and can do things that no man kind can do. The internet is an open source to anyone, and anybody can get anything from it.

Not only is the computer a digital source, but the television is also. Though the internet is so huge it had spread expanded across the globe. It is a use in school, offices, hospitals, and other places. Like I said it is a powerful source. Not only the internet has a bad affect on teens, but it also has a good affect to.

Information for example, there is a bunch of great information on the internet. Teens, adults, and elementary students can get great information from it. Also, news spreads faster. If it has to do with family problems all the way to president problems, it’s there at a click of a button.

There is one solution for all this copy writing. Know how to use the internet correctly. A great solution is teaching people online courses and help then become a responsible digital citizen when it comes to literacy and other informational things.

In today’s world people are beginning to abuse digital literacy. People in this world are using the internet to get information. They do not follow the Copyright law of fair use. When you break this law you could be plagiarizing or even “copyrighting”. It just depends. Plagiarizing is against the law, if you do so you may go to jail. Or even if you are in school and school officials find out, you could be expelled. Remember that plagiarizing is illegal and think before you do so. Also if you wrote a paper and pubilshed it and then someone goes around and copy and pastes it on a word document and then prints it out and hands it in to their teacher. Another thing is that when you copy someones work you are not learning anything.

The ability to publish your own information is sometimes called blogging. People can log on to different sites and write their opinions on the websites. The information might not be accurate. If anyone can publish anything, there is no real way to determine if ALL the information published is true.
Some communication devices can not be trusted either. If you receive a suspicious e-mail, it could contain a virus or hoax. Sometimes, even e-mails that come from family members or friends are not always as they seem.
Many people are unaware that when they go online, they leave a record of their movements. You can, without meaning to, give personal information to other people and companies that track data. Information about people’s favorite sites, surfing habits and purchases are valuable to companies that conduct business by using the Internet. Communication technologies, like e-mail, allow personal information to be collected. The information could be sold to other groups or people, such as government departments, law-enforcement agencies, or businesses.

4. Possible solutions to the problems that have emerged.

Elementary Aged Students

We could teach them not to cheat and use plagiarism. They look up to us so we could tell them that plagiarism and cheating is not something that they do not want to do. You could also tell them that they might get expelled or fail the grade.

Middle/ High School Aged Students

If we want to stop the problems that we are facing on the internet, we need to take steps to help stop and prevent them. We need to continue to not cheat and plagiarize.People do not realize that cheating and plagiarizing is not right and they could get expelled. Also you can not completely delete what you have written on the internet. The internet can be your friend but when you take advantage of it,it well get you. Once its out there its hard to delete it all.

There are many solutions that can help prevent plagiarizing and copyrighting. At a young age teachers could give lessons to students. It could help them learn the consequences of plagiarizing. Not only at a young age, but at any age, people of all ages are abusing the internet usage. Giving the classes may take a long time. But it will improve the abuse of the internet.

We should educate the adults to the problems that have arisen on the Internet. Perhaps, if they knew more about the topic, they would be more careful about using the Internet and the things they do on there.
I think a problem with Digital Literacy is that adults and other people rely too much on getting their information digitally which is a problem because computers, projectors, televisions, etc. aren’t consistently reliable. Most of these digital devices need electricity, and power shortages and cut outs do happen. Also the information on the internet isn’t always correct. Just about anyone can have their own website and write whatever they want. It is important that people find a few websites that include the same information. If people do this then they can be sure that the information is true. Another way to check your information is to research books. Books are very reliable. They have to be published and the whole process takes more money and time than a website.
There are several ways to find out who has published the information. By knowing who or what group wrote the information, you can decide if the information could be accurate. Sending an e-mail and talking to the person who has written the work could allow you to find out how they found the information or if it was just their opinion. Some search engines can help you learn more about an author of a website. Looking at the links on the page could help you evaluate whether the information is true or not. Never allow the Internet to be your only resource: magazines, books, encyclopedia, and/or dictionaries are more reliable sources of information, especially if they have been recently published.
Educate adults with the problems on the Internet. Maybe if they knew more about the topic, adults would be more careful about what they do on the Internet.
Adults should also teach children to use more resources then just the Internet and how they should be wary about the information they may find.
